In a city where over half of the population is under the age of 18, Kids Ministry is a huge, ongoing task. Marlene helps teach elementary age kids in a neighborhood called Agdao, in one of the poorer areas of town. Approximately 30 kids show up for class and activities on Saturday afternoons, and up to 80 kids pack a local church on Wednesday nights. In addition, she does home visits during the week, to help build relationships not only with the kids, but the entire family. This allows her and her fellow teachers to get an idea of what practical needs there may be, as well as offer prayer and emotional support. In addition, there is plenty of opportunities for the kids to earn special treats, such as swimming trips and afternoons at the mall, for reaching goals set in class!
